In a captivating interview with Telecom Review, Yasser Alsaied, the Vice President of IoT at Amazon Web Services (AWS), tackled AWS’ exciting mission centered around revolutionizing the Internet of Things (IoT) landscape.

How does AWS IoT assist international companies in harnessing IoT technology?

We are building scalable services that are globally available in all our available zones. AWS has more than 240 fully featured services for compute, storage, databases, networking, analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), mobile, security, hybrid, virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR), media, and application development, deployment, and management from 102 Availability Zones within 32 geographic regions. We have IT services installed in these regions. Service providers, startups, and large corporations can easily access and utilize these services by making a simple API call. This enables them to leverage AWS' storage and computing capabilities with the security and reliability that users expect from AWS. This scale is important as the adoption of IoT and the install base for IoT devices continues to ramp up every year. From secure device connectivity to management, storage, and analytics, AWS IoT has the broadest and deepest services that customers can use to build complete solutions. Customers can build innovative, differentiated solutions on secure, proven, and elastic cloud infrastructure that scales to billions of devices and trillions of messages.

Please tell us about AWS IoT's role in developing intelligent automobiles. Who are your key customers?

Automotive is one of our key growth areas and it's very important to utilize IoT services because the automotive sector generates a lot of data; whether it's camera data, LiDAR, radar, or sensors from cars. Some cars have hundreds of sensors while some have 200 sensors. This data is very important; whether it's for the manufacturer, for fleet management, or for insurance companies.
AWS IoT offers purpose-built, automotive-specific services designed to comprehend the data format originating from the car. This data is then directed into a customer-specific data lake. Again, this could be for a management company or it could be for a manufacturer. They want to see how their car operates in different geographies. All this data will be available for them to use for analytics and to generate better design and operational insights. We have those services— AWS IoT FleetWise is a notable example, along with AWS IoT Core. We are actively collaborating with renowned customers, such as Honda, Toyota, and numerous others on their connected vehicle vision.

What new updates and innovations can we expect from AWS IoT in the coming days?

We continue to innovate in areas that alleviate the burden on our customers, particularly in infrastructure, reliability, scalability, and security. In 2023, we rolled out more than 35 new features to simplify and accelerate solution development efforts for our customers. Continuous additions of new innovations and features ensure that customers can leverage these advancements to enhance their service to their own customers. We are focusing on aspects such as security and actively engaging in AI activities. The collection of data plays a significant role in enriching the data models that customers require for the development of more effective generative AI. This, in turn, can be utilized by their own staff or for the benefit of their customers.

We offer highly innovative services tailored for factories, including our AWS IoT SiteWise Edge feature. These capabilities operate at the edge, collecting data from manufacturing processes, enabling analytics and facilitating smart manufacturing initiatives. Because in the end, the goal is to have a comprehensive dataset in the cloud that customers can leverage to make informed decisions about system updates, changes, cost-saving measures, and more. That's what we are coming up with in a lot of these areas.
