HMD Global, the parent company of Nokia phones, has unveiled the Nokia 8, a high performance smartphone designed with content creators in mind. It's the first "premium" smartphone to be launched by HMD Global. The device introduces a "world first" in enabling Dual-Sight video to be live-streamed natively and in real-time to social feeds such as Facebook and YouTube.

Qualcomm's legal spat with Apple could affect its Q4 earnings, the chipmaker disclosed in a regulatory filing seen by Reuters, where it responded to questions from the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The company is set to issue its next quarterly results filing on November 1, revealing its earnings for the fourth quarter.

Huawei officially released its 5G-oriented mobile bearer solution X-Haul on August 14. The solution has four core values: providing flexible access capabilities that can match the scenario of any site; implementing agile network operations based on a cloud architecture; enabling new service innovation through end-to-end network slicing; and supporting smooth evolution from 4G bearer networks to 5G bearer networks.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of the United Arab Emirates has begun preparations to host the 75th RIPE Meeting, an event that gathers Internet Service Providers (ISPs), network operators, and other parties to discuss important issues that face the internet community. RIPE 75 will take place from October 22 to 26, 2017 in Dubai, and supports TRA's efforts to develop its Information Technology (IT) infrastructure to rank first in the 2021 Smart and E-Services Index.

Nokia and Mobily announced the successful completion of License Assisted Access (LAA). Once deployed Mobily's customers will be able to enjoy faster internet speeds to download high-bandwidth consuming applications. The solution will be initially deployed in the densely populated capital city of Saudi (Riyadh) and other major cities in the Kingdom.

ADVA Optical Networking announced that a majority of the shares of MRV Communications, Inc. were validly tendered and the other conditions to the tender offer have been satisfied. American Stock Transfer & Trust Company LLC, the depositary for the tender offer, has indicated that as of midnight EDT, Friday, August 11, 2017, a total of 5,296,053 shares of MRV Communications, Inc.'s common stock, or approximately 79% of the total number of shares issued and outstanding, have been validly tendered into and not properly withdrawn from the tender offer. The depositary has indicated that no shares were tendered pursuant to the guaranteed delivery procedures set forth in the Offer to Purchase.

Ericsson has become a member of a consortium led by operator Zain Kuwait. The consortium will carry out a large digital transformation project for local utilities. The project will be completed by 2024 and as the sole technology partner, Ericsson will deploy a new smart metering solution.

Qualcomm Technologies has laid out its vision for ubiquitous on-device artificial intelligence (AI) complementing cloud AI. In a press release the company said it "envision a world where AI makes devices, machines, automobiles, and things much more intelligent, simplifying and enriching our daily lives."

In a US wireless industry first, Verizon, Ericsson, and Qualcomm Technologies announced on August 2 they reached 953 Mbps (just under 1 gigabit per second) in a joint commercial network deployment in Boca Raton, Florida. While lab tests have shown comparable speeds in recent months, this is the fastest announced speed achieved in a real-world, dynamic network environment leveraging Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) technology.
