German telecom giant Deutsche Telekom (DT) and Huawei, together with Intel, announced they have collaborated to achieve the world's first 5G interoperability and development testing (IODT) based on the 3GPP R15 Standard with a commercial base station.

Qualcomm released a statement on January 24 confirming it will appeal a massive fine imposed by the European Commission for alleged market dominance abuse. Earlier that day, the European Commission said in a statement it had decided to fine Qualcomm €997 million ($1.2 billion) for payments it made to Apple in order to secure its leading market position for LTE baseband chipsets.

With mobile data traffic surging by eight times and 1 billion 5G subscriptions expected by the end of 2023, mobile operators must meet consumer and enterprise demand for applications such as 4K/8K video streaming, virtual reality/augmented reality, and immersive media, suggests telecom equipment vendor Ericsson.

Vodafone Group's Networks Centre of Excellence team and the Huawei Mobile Innovation Centre have been testing a way to help address spectrum constraints in Turkey. The teams have completed the world's first trial of GSM/LTE (GL) 900MHz dynamic spectrum sharing on Vodafone's commercial networks in the Black Coast city of Trabzon.

Vodafone and Huawei have conducted a successful field trial of Fixed Access Network Slicing. The virtual access network solution partitions a physical fibre to the home (FTTH) network into multiple virtual network slices, creating multi-tenancy virtualization of the access network.

In a letter to stockholders ahead of its 2018 Annual Meeting of Stockholders to be held on March 6, Qualcomm highlighted details of a $1 billion strategy which aims to generate "significant value" for investors in the near term, in the wake of Broadcom making moves to acquire Qualcomm, which the company has labeled "opportunistic" and "aggressive".

Qualcomm issued a letter to investors ahead of its annual stockholder meeting in March, highlighting the "significant" regulatory issues with Broadcom's acquisition proposal. This follows a previous letter issued by Qualcomm last week in which the company demonstrated why Broadcom's "hostile takeover" would "dramatically undervalue" Qualcomm.

Ericsson released a statement on January 16 noting that it will book SEK 14.2 billion (US$ 1.77 billion) in write-downs in its Q4 2017 financial results. The write-downs, Ericsson said, are related to the company's Digital Services and Other divisions, in addition to an SEK 1 billion charge related to tax changes in the United States.
